Many Chihuahuas are born with a Molera (also called a fontanel). It is a soft spot, much like the soft spot in a human baby, that is located in the top of the Chihuahuas skull. The Molera varies in size, shape and position on the top of the Chihuahuas skull. It is considered a breed characteristic, and not a birth defect!

Much like a newborn baby, you must be careful with your Chihuahua when it comes to its Molera. If bumped to hard, you can injure or even kill your puppy.

As the Chihuahua puppy grows, its Molera gets smaller. In adulthood the Molera is usually the size of a nickel or dime.

Vets who are not familiar with Chihuahuas often mistake the Molera for a condition known as Hydrocephalus (water on the brain). It is recommended that you get a Vet who is familiar with this small breed.
